Media Release: Puma Reissue Boris Becker Og

AW’14 will see PUMA reissue the Becker OG, the classic mid top shoe, that a 17-year old Boris Becker wore during his famous and groundbreaking Wimbledon win.

Back for the first time, the Becker OG has been re-imagined for this season, and celebrates PUMA’s rich Tennis heritage.

It started in the 60’s, when PUMA’s German designers and developers really began to perfect performance sport shoemaking, considering human factors that other companies weren’t even thinking of yet.

PUMA’s heightened awareness of ergonomics helped it develop a new, innovative approach to footwear. These moulded shoes were made in Europe, with a super high quality, that was tough to replicate, moulding to the foot to enable greater support and comfort.

This design helped top athletes like Boris Becker play longer without fatigue. They became one with their PUMA shoes. This ‘cradling of the foot’ was a game changer. When coupled with that underdog style and tube socks, a unique sporting aesthetic was born.

A timeless classic made for the court but loved on the streets, the Becker OG merges the best of PUMA’s performance heritage and design language. The all white leather and bright red Formstripe sees the legend of Becker ready to be revived by a whole new generation.

A limited number of the Becker OG sneakers, retailing at R2499, will be available in South Africa from 25 October at Shelflife stores with more stock arriving in 2015. Keep an eye out on twitter @PUMASouthAfrica and pumaselect.co.za for further details.

Media Release : Puma x McQueen Aw’14 Collection

AW14 sees PUMA partner with McQ for the debut PUMA x McQ collection. For over 65 years, PUMA has established a history of making fast product designs for the fastest athletes on the planet, with innovations not only in performance but also lifestyle.

While PUMA is first and foremost a sports performance brand, during the 80’s the brand’s sporting heritage became visible on the streets of New York, with the emergence of hip-hop and street culture. By the 90’s, PUMA recognised sports growing influence on high fashion, subsequently becoming the first sports brand to collaborate with a Fashion House.

McQ, a contemporary brand from Alexander McQueen, distills the vision of Creative Director Sarah Burton into collections that embody an extravagant effortlessness for everyday, complimenting the luxurious aesthetic of the mainline offer. Rooted in the renegade London spirit of Lee Alexander McQueen who founded the brand in 2005, McQ embodies a nonchalant ease and a non-conformist attitude.

PUMA’s progressive, design-led ethos resulted in its hugely successful partnership with the fashion house Alexander McQueen. For the past 4 years PUMA has explored the world of McQueen and now the brand is about to embark on an exciting new journey with McQ.

McQ has always taken inspiration from global subcultures, offering clothing that celebrates the youthful experimentation and creativity of the art and music worlds. In contrast PUMA, fundamentally a sports brand, has inspired street culture, music and fashion. Together PUMA and McQ draw on their divergent experiences to investigate the point at which performance fuses with fashion.

The debut collection merges McQ’s rebellious spirit and bold youth culture references with PUMA’s fabled history of athletic innovation. The PUMA x McQ AW ’14 Collection will be available in stores from 1st August.

Jerri Mokgofe x Get The Look: G-Star Raw Denim Autumn/Winter 2014

Les-bianee-Honest I have always been a closeted big fan of G-Star Raw Denim BUT I have always kept my distance and pretend the brand does not exist. It is there, top of mind when it comes to my denim consideration set. But I always treated it like the proverbial big denim blue elephant in the room. Reason being that like any other fashion-slore; we have impeccable taste we cannot afford. There, I said it – I am glad this is now out of the way.

... Back to subject matter.

A few weeks ago just before the G-Star Raw Night Johannesburg event.  I was invited by the fabulous PR glam-quad mafias from Vivid Luxury to come meet up with the international G-Star Raw team from the Headquarters in Netherlands and like all well mannered people they came bearing gifts.

I was presented with the most well constructed garments in fine quality fabrics during the meeting and was casually asked to pick a few items that I lusted after. Thinking about it now, I honestly regret not straight-up telling them I loved everything and asking to keep everything – I mean hellooo – ain’t no shame in the game homes!

When Aidaly Sosa of G-Star Raw nonchalantly presented me with this twinsie set [i am wearing] I completely lost my shit and I was done going through any more options presented to me. The trench coat is BUCK the pants are just on another level; details, cuts, construction, fabric, stitching, versatility, Everything, More and Beyond!

Sadly, you will not be able to shop this look and if I heard correctly, these were the only samples in their possession. I could be wrong but I can double check for you if you that thirsty for some this goodness. Possibly available online? I dunno.

What I know for sure is the kicks I am wearing are PUMA x Solange Girls of Blaze Discs Collection and are available in South Africa but only a limited quantity. They are the most comfortable pair of sneakers with a shit load of character to them that I own thus far.  They check all the boxes, when I am out on the streets!

Look aint complaining but I could get used to expanding my G-Star Raw Denim collection now. All I want is more, more, and RAW yummy denim in my life!

Media Release: PUMA Celebrates the 5th Anniversary of Sneaker Freaker’s Blaze of Glory with a Limited Edition Re-Issue Pack

PUMA and SNEAKER FREAKER have once again joined forces, this time to commemorate the release of their first collaboration together.  As notorious as it was successful, Sneaker Freaker’s ‘Great White’ version of PUMA’s Blaze of Glory runner hit the street in April 2008.  Melding sleek silver-grey nubuck suede with gummy pink pops, aqua blue and blood red highlights, the subversive shark-themed design was met with a profound and positive response.  Five years later, in celebration of the enduring success of the project, an exclusive double release of the Blaze of Glory - in both original colours and with a new lightweight version - will be released on Sneaker Freaker online on Saturday, November 23rd, 2013 and then globally, at selected sneaker boutiques on Saturday, November 30th, 2013.

Founded in 2002 by Simon “Woody” Wood from Melbourne, Australia, Sneaker Freaker magazine is the world’s first and only global sneaker magazine.  Widely admired for its frank and humorous approach to analysing footwear, Sneaker Freaker’s globally influential role has helped shape the industry over the past decade.  The magazine is sold in over 40 countries and also published in Russian, Spanish and German.

As Wood cheekily confesses, “I started the magazine purely with the idea of getting loads of free shoes.  That part came true, but I had no idea how my life would turn out.  For ten years I have been traveling the world documenting sneaker culture.  Designing a PUMA with my name on it was a pipe dream before I started Sneaker Freaker.  This particular collaboration project is a very special memory.”

Back in 2008, PUMA released two versions of the Blaze of Glory in collaboration with Sneaker Freaker.  The first was known as the ‘Great White’ and the second release was known as the ‘Black Beast’.  Laden with subtle references to sharks in the form of anodized tooth jewels, triangulated attack logos and a translucent Trinomic ‘river of blood’ sole, the ‘Great White’ and ‘Black Beast’ Blaze of Glory’s sold out in seconds all over the globe.  A third Friends and Family Blaze of Glory version was made from exotic and genuine sharkskin and stealthily given away in limited numbers.

“We found a supplier of real shark skin leather and convinced PUMA to make some exclusive pairs,” Wood recalls.  “The shark leather turned out to be super wrinkly, surprisingly tough and
blacker than the ace of spades.  We will never see shark leather used again in footwear. They were just so beautiful.

Some five years later, the PUMA x SNEAKER FREAKER Blaze of Glory have cemented their status in the history books as arguably PUMA’s most successful collaboration projects of all time.  Revisiting such an iconic collaboration has never really been done before, but sheer demand and interest in the shoes convinced Wood that the timing was right and the idea was sound.

States Wood, “Out of all the shoes I have created, this is the one project I still get asked about all the time.  As they are so fondly remembered, I thought it would be nice to see them back on the streets again.  Rules are meant to be broken and even I would love a fresh pair of the Blaze of Glory as much as anyone.”

Under Wood’s direction, the Blaze of Glory shoes were remade with selective amendments and as identical to the originals.  The satin sock-lining is now colour coded, the lush nubuck has been fettled with a deep emboss that mimics sharkskin and a performance inner sole has been inserted to ramp up comfort.  The Blaze of Glory LTWT is made up of lightweight neoprene mesh with an innovative twist using welded synthetics and reflective materials.  Signature features like the shark tooth jewels, diamond-like logo and the fluorescent pink pop intact on the Blaze of Glory OG black shoe, are still maintained on the re-issued versions.

The PUMA x Sneaker Freaker Blaze of Glory 5th Anniversary pack will be sold in an oversize custom box complete with foam padding and embossed with the project’s trademark diamond ‘shark attack’ logo, no doubt creating an even bigger splash this time around.

The PUMA x Sneaker Freaker Blaze range will be available in Shelflife stores in South Africa from 2 December 2013. RRP: R2499.00. For further information visit www.puma.com or call 021 551 0832.

Media Release | Puma X Sophia Chang (Lifestyle Collection Directors) For Autumn-Winter 2013

PUMA’s Autumn-Winter 13’ sport heritage products serve as a source of inspiration to up-and-coming artists and entertainers.  This season, PUMA reveals the Brand’s Lifestyle Collection Directors:  a collective group of influencers who connect culture, attitude, and style with ambition.  Sought out from the streets of Paris, Los Angeles and New York City, PUMA’s global group of Collection Directors have been assigned to enhance PUMA’s seasonal key products with their creativity, vision and passion under the ‘Next Starts Now’ platform.  The first of the Collection Directors to be introduced this month is Illustrator, Designer and self-proclaimed ‘Bun’ Queen, Sophia Chang.

NYC-born and bred, Chang’s enthusiasm for killer product designs and POP culture was infectious for her first collaboration with PUMA.  Tasked to visually reinvigorate the season’s Women’s Lifestyle Footwear collection, Chang and her dream team of talents, used the city streets of LA and New York as her backdrop for a photo-shoot that was remarkably colourful, spontaneous and empowering just as the collection itself.

“For me, this project was about giving women the power to own their style,” states Chang.  “The PUMA Women’s Lifestyle footwear styles are bright and fierce, just like us women.  I wanted to embrace the product designs and bring them to life within my illustrations and images.”

The Women’s Lifestyle Footwear collection is no exception to the ‘Next Starts Now’ seasonal attitude and Chang’s assortment of imagery brings centre stage a collection that is animalistic and bold.  Styles such as the Women’s Sky Wedge Reptile takes design cues from PUMA’s classic Sky Hi, a basketball shoe first introduced in 1992, whilst a futuristic twist to the PUMA Slipstream is mashed up with animal prints to inspire the Future Slipstream Women’s Lite, equally celebrating PUMA’s heritage.

Chang’s photographic images and illustrations will be supported by puma.com and through a series of digital activations on PUMA’s social media channels, including take-overs on PUMA’s Instagram and Tumblr pages from Thursday, September 12th to Wednesday, September 18th.  In addition, one of Chang’s illustrated designs will be hand painted onto a mural in New York City’s Soho district at the corner of Lafayette Street and Jersey Street from Sunday, September 15th to Saturday, October 12th, 2013.  A time-lapse video will be shared on PUMA’s Instagram on Monday, September 16th.

As for what is next with Chang and her high bun...it is on the rise and there is more to stay tuned for in the season with PUMA and its’ Collection Directors.  The next sensation, the next trend, the next icon won’t wait or hold back.  Neither does Sophia Chang.  Next doesn’t start later.  Next Starts Now.

PUMA’s Autumn-Winter 13’ Women’s Footwear collection is currently in-store at PUMA Retail and is made available on shop.puma.com.  PUMA’s next Collection Director reveal is set for October.
