This is what the press
release read wrt collection:
“The Adriaan Kuiters
Spring/Summer 13 collection is a powerful union of strong silhouettes, minimal
details and oversized proportions – all combined with textural prints. The
collection was conceived and made in collaboration with emerging young artist
Jody Paulsen and features men’s wear as well as women’s wear for the first
time. Fuelled by this debut of women’s wear, the collection plays with gender
roles by creating garments that juxtapose the rigidity and simplicity of
classic menswear with lighter fabrics traditionally associated with women’s
wear. The inspiration for the collection is derived from the practical nature of
basic sportswear. Here the use of neutral colour now heightens the focus on
layering, shape and proportion. Exaggerated unisex silhouettes of silk and
jersey are contrasted by stiffer fabrics such as linen, twill and leather to
create structured looks. These architectural pieces are intended to be weightless
yet volumous, permitting space between the body and garment.
The spirit of this collection is effortlessness, optimism and pride in individuality. The prints used in this collection include artful plays on fur, textural graphite drawings, squeegee paintings and analogue photography. These prints are inspired by fine art traditions and motivated Adriaan Kuiters to use the IZIKO South African National Gallery as a venue for the collection showing.”
